No single business dominates: the most-reviewed holds just 14% of the category's reviews, so the field is genuinely competitive.

How to choose a martial arts school
Start with your goal, since styles serve different aims: BJJ and wrestling focus on grappling, Muay Thai and boxing on striking, taekwondo and karate on traditional forms and discipline, and many people simply want fitness, confidence, or a structured activity for their kids. The right school depends on which of those you are after.
Visit and watch or take a trial class. Look for qualified, credentialed instructors, a clean facility, and a culture that matches you — some schools are competitive, others family-friendly and supportive. Ask about class sizes, the belt or ranking system, required gear, and contract terms, since long lock-ins and equipment fees are where surprises hide.
Do not read much into the name. Academy, gym, dojo, dojang, and club all describe the same thing, and the choice usually reflects the style’s tradition rather than anything about quality — jiu-jitsu tends to run academies, Muay Thai and boxing gyms, karate and taekwondo dojos and dojangs. Several of the schools listed here teach more than one style under one roof. Judge the instruction and the room, not the sign.
Frequently asked questions
How much do martial arts classes cost in Jacksonville?
Most schools charge monthly tuition, sometimes with a registration fee and gear costs. Watch for long-term contracts and ask what is included — testing fees and uniforms are sometimes extra. Many offer a free trial class.
Which martial art should I choose?
It depends on your goal: BJJ for grappling and self-defense, Muay Thai or boxing for striking and conditioning, taekwondo or karate for tradition and discipline. Trying a class in a couple of styles is the best way to decide.
Is martial arts good for kids?
Many schools have excellent kids’ programs that build discipline, focus, confidence, and fitness in a structured setting. Look for instructors experienced with children and class sizes that allow real attention.
Do I need experience or equipment to start?
No experience is needed — beginner classes assume you are new. Schools often provide loaner gear at first, then you buy your own (a gi, gloves, etc.) as you continue. Ask what is required before your trial.

Those scores come from aggregated public reviews, not from us, and a business cannot pay to raise its rating.
We update our data periodically so the martial arts schools you see reflect how they are serving Jacksonville today. Listings marked as verified have confirmed their business details directly.
